Van Dyke Bitters Co., 2-1/2c Blue on Bluish Glazed
Paper (RS390). Large margins to full, purple "Van Dyke Bitters Co. Jul. 15, 1898" circular datestamp cancel, few thins and sealed tears VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 2-1/2 CENT VAN DYKE BITTERS COMPANY PROVISIONAL PROPRIETARY
ISSUE. Dr. Van Dyke's Holland Bitters first appeared in the U.S. in the 1850's and was sold as a cure-all. The bottle and advertising featured the somewhat disconcerting image of a headless man flailing a medieval weapon on one hand, holding a
bottle in the other, and with a coat of arms on his chest. By 1919, the St. Louis city directory listed the company as a wine and liquor retailer. (Image) Search for comparables at SiegelAuctions.com |
