In May 1900, the British retook Vryburg from the Boer forces. They subsequently began overprinting South African Republic stamps with this overprint in retaliation for the Boers doing the same on Cape of Good Hope stamps (Nos. N1-4). Small quantities are known to exist for each value. A tiny fraction of the Half-Penny and One-Penny stamps have the overprint reading down
