1050 c ImageCHINA, 1897, 1c on 1c Orange Red, Small Dowager Surcharge (29; Chan 38). Horizontal pair (couple blunted perfs at bottom), tied by bold pakua cancel on brown corner card cover to Providence R.I., cover entering Japanese mails with 1896 5s Deep Ultramarine (88) and tied by "Shanghai, I.J.P.O., 26 Mar. 97" circular datestamp, lightly struck Customs double-oval datestamp, Shanghai, Yokohama and San Francisco transit and Providence arrival backstamps, cover (which is naturally brownish in color) has some wrinkles and a horizontal bend, Very Fine, an attractive combination cover used from China through the Japanese Post to the United States, the corner card for C.H. Finch of Suifu and presumably sender was an American Missionary and doctor, the use of the 5s General Kitashirakawa is quite ironic given that the stamp was commemorating the Japanese victory in the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894-95, this cover emanated from an old New England collection formed in the 1920s and 1930s and offered for the first time (Image)
