India - 1852 Scinde Dawk thru 1854 Lithograph Issues
Lot Sym. Lot Description
3347°   ImageINDIA, 1852, -1/2a Red, Scinde District Post (SG S3; Scott A3). Complete design, strong embossing, cancelled by diamond of dots and affixed on native piece, trace of datestamp on reverse, typical light cracking as always

VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE RED "SCINDE DAWK". A KEY ITEM TO ANY EARLY INDIA COLLECTION.

The -1/2a Red Scinde Dawk was the first stamp issued in all of Asia. Because it was embossed on a wax wafer it had a tendency to crack (and often disintegrate). It was deemed unacceptable and quickly replaced with the white and blue stamps embossed on paper. The example offered here, completely intact, is among the very finest of the small number available.

Although the Scott catalog notes that two unused copies exist, current research suggests these were all cancelled by the postmaster prior to affixing on the letter, and that no genuine unused examples exists. One of the two previously thought unused copies received a recent negative B.P.A. certificate.

3355°   ImageINDIA, 1854, 4a Red & Blue, Head Inverted (SG 18a; Scott 6c). 1st Printing, Head Die I, Frame Die I, neatly cut to shape as most of the known examples, margins to touching in places, neat diamond of dots cancel, thin at top left and small tear at bottom (neither of which visually detracts)

FINE AND HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST CELEBRATED AND ICONIC POSTAGE STAMPS -- THE 1854 4-ANNA HEAD INVERTED ERROR. ONE OF ONLY 28 CONFIRMED EXAMPLES AND DESTINED FOR A WORLD-CLASS COLLECTION OF INDIA.

Of the 28 examples, three are cut square examples. A further six whose details are unclear and/or questionable since they haven't been on the market in many years - some dating back to the late 1890s and therefore may be duplicates and or fakes. As few as 23 examples are privately owned with five institutionalized.

Miraculously, no mention of this error was made until 1874 where an example was exhibited at a Royal Philatelic Society London meeting. Since then, this error has been a highly sought after item and examples have graced some of the finest collections of India ever formed.

Ex Griswold, Jatia and Sagar. Example XXV in Encyclopedia of Rare and Famous Stamps by L.N. Williams. Small "W.H.C." (Colson) backstamp. With 2002 B.P.A. and 2012 Sismondo certificates. Scott $165,000.00 (Image)
