Co., Los Angeles, Aug. 29" double-circle datestamp on light yellow cover to Clifton, England, light crease affects stamps (not mentioned on accompanying certificate), some slight overall cover wear

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 3-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE ON A COVER CARRIED BY THE PACIFIC UNION EXPRESS COMPANY IN CALIFORNIA, THEN BY TRANSATLANTIC MAIL TO ENGLAND.

This was carried privately to New York, then sent to England in a bulk package of mail. On arrival it was placed in another envelope and delivered to destination at the 1p rate. The required U.S. postage was cancelled by the Pacific Union Express Company, but it never entered the regular U.S. mails.
