VERY FINE. A SPECTACULAR ILLUSTRATED ENVELOPE BOTH IN TERMS OF SIZE AND INTRICATE DESIGN.
The publisher of the envelope was W. H. Cremer, Jr., who was an importer of foreign toys and published books on magic in the 1860s. The addressee was Arthur Cocks, who served under Sir Charles Napier and fought with Lord Gough's army during the Second Sikh War 1848-49.
At 13-1/2" x 5", this is probably the largest 19th Century envelope to go through the mail. There were very few of these envelopes made. The high cost of producing them, combined with the small demand for such a large-sized envelope, would not have made commercial sense. This is the only example we have seen.
Last offered in a 1988 Robson Lowe (Christie's) sale. (Image)
VERY FINE. A SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE "ABNORMAL" 6-PENCE BUFF PLATE 13. A MAJOR GREAT BRITAIN RARITY OF WHICH APPROXIMATELY 30 EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN.
This stamp was accidentally released for sale when a few imprimatur sheets in Buff were perforated and mixed with normal inventory. The actual intended stamp was the issued 6p Gray (62; SG 146-147). It is believed around 30 examples exist of which all are used and many are plagued by a myriad of faults.
With 1986 Brandon certificate. SG £25,000 (Image)
