VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE UNISSUED 1876 PLATE ONE 8-PENCE BROWN LILAC. ONE OF THE KEY RARITIES OF THE SURFACE PRINTED ISSUES.
The 8-Pence stamp was originally printed in Brown Lilac, but it was never issued to post offices. All but a tiny number were destroyed. Of the surviving copies, all have the perfs cutting the design at top and/or left to varying degrees. The 8-Pence stamp was then printed in Orange instead.
With 1991 B.P.A. certificate. SG £9,750 (Image)
