1223 c ImageEGYPT, 1898, 3m on 2pi Orange, Postage Due Provisional (J19; SG D75; Nile Post PD19). Vertical pair tied by clear "Benha 3 FE 89" (date year plug transposed) bilingual circular datestamp upon arrival and with boxed "T" handstamp, cover sent by an Egyptian solider serving in the Sudan and stamped incorrectly with four left-hand halves of the 1898 "Camel Train" Military Telegraph stamps which are tied by "Omdurman 23 I 99" bilingual circular datestamp with an additional strike beside, Benha arrival backstamp, cover roughly opened at top right

FINE. AN INCREDIBLY RARE 1898 POSTAGE DUE PROVISIONAL USE ON COVER PAYING THE DOUBLED (PENALTY) SOLDER'S RATE.

Unused examples of this stamp are quite common and falsely lead collectors into believing genuine uses are as well. These stamps were surcharged as there were no stamps to cover the 3m Solider's rate. Therefore, the rarity is due to the fact that these were used by soldiers sending letters home, often to small Egyptian towns with most lost to collectors. Many of the known examples suffer cover faults. (Image)
