2068 c Image"Academy Oct. 5" (West Virginia). Manuscript postmark with "Paid 5" on folded letter datelined "Hillsboro Oct. the 5th 1861" to Lewisburg Va., interesting contents incl. "it is said 24,000 of the enemy came down of Cheat on 8,000 of our men. Rumor says we put them to flight with the loss of 10 while their loss was great but we have not heard the particulars", minor wear, Very Fine and rare, accompanied by typed transcript and letter explaining that Hillsboro, in Pocahontas County, settled in 1765, conflicted with another older Hillsboro in Loudon County and so the post office was called Academy until it became a part of West Virginia when it could reassume the name Hillsboro, ex Dr. Warren (Image)
