VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE COVER WITH A FOUR-MARGIN EXAMPLE OF THE BATON ROUGE 5-CENT PROVISIONAL WITH MALTESE CROSS BORDER.
According to http://4thla.com/history.htm , at this point in the war the 4th La. was stationed along the Mississippi sound to protect against the possibility of invasion. Composed mainly of well-to-do planters and their sons, almost everyone in the original company was promoted to the rank of officer. (Image)

FINE. A RARE SOUND OFF-COVER EXAMPLE OF THE BATON ROUGE POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL WITH CRISS-CROSS BORDER.
Richard L. Calhoun believes that the Criss-Cross border setting was the first one used to print stamps, based on type characteristics of the four different settings. However, dated examples suggest that the 5c Criss-Cross border stamps came from a second printing circa November 1861.

FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT BLACK ON PINK BEAUMONT PROVISIONAL. ONLY 15 ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.
Our census of the Beaumont Provisionals records only 21 of any kind, including the unique Large 10c on Yellow (on cover), 5 of the Small 10c on Yellow (each on cover), and 15 of the Small 10c on Pink (12 covers, 3 off cover, none known unused). Most are faulty.
The example offered here was discovered in an old scrapbook which also contained newspaper articles and a No. 11. The scrapbook is referenced in an accompanying 1936 authentication letter from Dietz.
