The Brandon Collection of Confederate States, Part 2 continued...

General Issues Off Cover continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
244 ogbl Image2c Green (3). Block of four with vertical gutter, original gum, small h.r. at top, large and even margins, deep shade, few vertical creases with one causing small thins and ending in small tear

VERY FINE APPEARING ORIGINAL-GUM GUTTER BLOCK OF THE 2-CENT LITHOGRAPH ISSUE.

The C.S.A. Lithograph Issues (Scott 1-5) were produced from printing stones of 200 subjects, arranged in side-by-side panes of 100, with a vertical gutter between. Each of the left and right panes of 100 consisted of two transfers of the 50-subject transfer stone. Multiples crossing the vertical gutter that separated the left and right transfer units are rare, as the sheet of 200 was typically separated into panes of 100 before individual stamps or blocks were cut out.

Scott Retail as normal block of four with no premium for the gutter. (Image)

249 og Image10c Rose (5). Positions 45-47, horizontal strip of three with complete "LITH. OF HOYER & LUDWIG RICHMOND VA." Type 1 imprint at bottom, original gum, few h.r. and few adherences, radiant color, few flaws including thin spots, creases and small edge tears

VERY FINE APPEARANCE AND AN IMPORTANT CONFEDERATE STATES RARITY. THIS IS ONE OF FIVE OR FEWER RECORDED MULTIPLES OF THE 10-CENT ROSE LITHOGRAPH SHOWING THE COMPLETE IMPRINT. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH ORIGINAL GUM.

We are aware of at least two unused pairs of the 10c Rose showing the imprint. Both have a portion of "Richmond" missing -- one lacks the "M" and "N", while the other lacks most of the lettering after "RI" and is also partially severed and rejoined. A vertical strip of three is also known, but this only shows part of the imprint. A strip of four showing full imprint (no gum) was offered in our Sale 1043, and this is the largest multiple containing the full imprint we have been able to locate, followed by the strip offered here. 254 ogbl Image10c Blue, "TEN" (9). Horizontal block of ten, original gum, two small h.r., one or two stamps at bottom possibly Mint N.H., huge margins to just barely in at upper left

VERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A PHENOMENAL BLOCK OF TEN OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES "TEN" ISSUE. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST MULTIPLES IN EXISTENCE.

This is the largest multiple we have offered in one of our auctions since the 1990's. We offered a block of 20 in 1970, but that may have been broken. When blocks do come up for auction they tend to be faulty. The multiple offered here is not only a rare "TEN" multiple, it is exponentially rarer when condition is a factor.

Scott Retail as two blocks of four and a pair. (Image)
