1074 c Image(Niagara, Canada, to Buffalo N.Y. via Niagara and Youngstown Exchange Offices, 1841) "Niagara U.C. Sep. 23, 1841". Circular datestamp struck in red on folded letter to Buffalo N.Y., red "Youngstown N.Y. Sep. 23?" circular datestamp with manuscript "10" rate, Very Fine and scarce use through these exchange offices (Queenston and Lewiston are more frequently seen), while the official ferriage fees were discontinued in 1837, some exchange points still charged an adjacent border town fee similar to the later "Line Rate", in this case 2d, converted to 4c plus 6c for postage to Buffalo (Image)

1075 c Image(Inverness, Scotland, to Cornwall, Canada, via Lewiston and Queenston Exchange Offices, 1828) "New-York Dec. 20". Circular datestamp with matching "Ship" arc handstamp on folded letter from Inverness, Scotland, to Cornwall, Canada, manuscript "20-3/4" (18-3/4c plus 2c) converted to 1N1 U.S. plus 2d ferriage, plus 1N2 postage to Cornwall (totaled as "1N2 & 1/3"), some minor edgewear, Very Fine, while Cornwall is on the St. Lawrence River it was not an exchange office, therefore this letter had to travel much further via the Queenston (Niagara-on-the-Lake) Exchange office and back up the St. Lawrence, incurring the high Canadian postage (Image)

Manuscript postmark on folded letter to Niagara Falls, Canada, manuscript "Paid 25" (cents) for over-400 miles rate, instead of being exchanged via Lewiston N.Y. and Queenston (for 2d ferriage) it was routed via Cape Vincent and Kingston and so charged 3d ferriage plus 11d postage for 200-300 miles (total "1/2"), Very Fine, an interesting routing and use (Image)
