EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR A ND RARE FREMONT CAMPAIGN COVER INCORPORATING ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE LEGENDARY FRONTIERSMAN FIGHTING INDIANS AND REACHING THE PEAK OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS.

This remarkable design has detailed woodcut engravings of battle scenes at lower left and top center, and the engraving above the portrait oval depicts Fremont at the top of the Rocky Mountains, which is similar to the image used more than 40 years later on the 5c Trans-Mississippi stamp. Another example of this design with the 3c 1857 Issue realized $2,000 in our sale of the Jarrett collection (Sale 970, lot 134). (Image)
