EXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE RARE MAURITIUS 1848 ONE-PENNY "POST PAID" EARLIEST IMPRESSION.
The first stamps of Mauritius were engraved directly onto two copper plates. The plates wore away relatively quickly, and so only a very limited number of impressions qualify as the earliest. Moreover, the three-ring numeral "1" cancellation used on this example is believed to have been made by J.O. Barnard - the engraver and printer of these stamps. Numerals 1-3 and 5-6 were introduced in May 1853. Very few strikes of this cancel are known to exist.
With 1981 R.P.S., 2008 Sismondo and 2008 Brandon certificates. SG £17,000 (Image)
