EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE IMPRINT, LETTER AND PLATE NUMBER STRIP OF FOUR OF THE $4.00 COLUMBIAN. ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT POSITION MULTIPLES OF THE ISSUE TO OBTAIN.
The $4.00 Columbian is extremely difficult to find in any form of plate number multiple. There are two, possibly three, plate blocks of six, which of course do not have the letters. The Scott-listed plate block of eight is actually a plate block of ten (it catalogues $400,000.00). The last imprint and plate number strip of four we offered was in our 1999 Argentum sale. Given its rarity, we are surprised Scott Catalogue assigns such a small value to the $4.00. In our opinion, the $4.00 and $5.00 Columbian imprint and plate number strips of four should have equal catalogue values (the $5.00 catalogues $62,500.00). (Image)
VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE AND BEAUTIFUL IMPRINT AND PLATE NUMBER STRIP OF FOUR OF THE $5.00 COLUMBIAN ISSUE. SCARCE IN SUCH PRISTINE CONDITION.
The $5.00 plate number block of eight is believed to be unique, therefore, a strip of four is the only practical means to show the complete imprint and plate number with plate letters. (Image)
