VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE "TEN" DIE PROOF IN BLACK. AN IMPORTANT CONFEDERATE PROOF RARITY.
Ex Hall (acquired by the family prior to World War II) and offered for only the second time in more than 75 years. This unique proof is listed in Scott, but the value of $1,500.00 is long outdated. Pictured in 2012 C.S.A. Catalogue and priced at $6,000.00 (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE DIE ESSAY FOR THE 10-CENT ARCHER & DALY DIE B ISSUE, ENGRAVED BY FREDERICK HALPIN.
The Die B or Type II design was a completely new engraving executed by Halpin in 1863. It is considered to be a superior work to the engraving of the Die A or Type I design by John Archer, and close examination reveals numerous differences between the two engravings. Dietz recorded only two examples of the Type II die essay. We have offered one other example, ex Murphy (Siegel Sale 795, lot 529).
Ex Bogg. With 1976 C.S.A. certificate stating "CSA 12E, Halpin die essay on wove, considered to be genuine." Mentioned in Scott but not formally listed or priced, with the statement "proofs made as essays from the dies...deeply engraved and printed in deep shades of the issued colors, but show only small differences from the stamps as finally issued. All are very rare." (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE DIE PROOF ON WOVE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 20-CENT GENERAL ISSUE.
We have offered only one other example of a 20c die proof, in our Sale 795 -- this item is from our 1986 Rarities sale.
With 1982 P.F. Certificate as "13P1a, Genuine Essay Die Proof". C.S.A. Catalogue lists calls this a progressive die proof, with a price of $4,500.00. (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A SPECTACULARLY RARE TRIAL COLOR DIE PROOF OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 20-CENT GENERAL ISSUE. THIS IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.
Like the die proof offered in the previous lot, this trial color proof shows clear cross-hatching in the background and an outer line.
Ex Murphy. C.S.A. Catalogue value $4,500.00 (Image)
VERY FINE. A RARE AND CHOICE LARGE DIE TRIAL COLOR PROOF OF THE ONE-CENT DE LA RUE ISSUE, INITIALED BY THE ENGRAVER.
VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE LARGE DIE PROOF OF THE ONE-CENT DE LA RUE ISSUE. THIS ITEM IS BELIEVED TO BE UNIQUE WITH THE SOURCE NOTATIONS.
Ex Murphy. Pictured and described in 2012 C.S.A. Catalogue with a price of $4,500.00. For some reason Scott prices the regular die proof of this issue at $2,000.00, versus $2,500.00 for the more available trial color proof in black (Image)
