France – Ballons Montes
Lot Sym. Lot Description
3662 c ImageFRANCE, Ballon Monte, Earliest Known Possible Cancellation Date. France No. 33 horizontal pair tied on cover (with letter enclosure) by star cancellation with "Paris 5e. 18 Sept. 70/R. St. Lazare" double-circle datestamp addressed to Turin, Italy, red boxed "PD" handstamp, Turin arrival backstamp of Oct. 25, Very Fine and scarce destination, this cover just missed the final departure from Paris (4e.) earlier in the day before encirclement by the Prussian army making this the earliest known possible cancellation date for a balloon flight, this should have been flown on the Neptune but due to the overload of mail, only the lightest pieces made the flight, judging by the arrival datestamp, this made it on a later balloon flight but it is impossible to determine the specific flight (Image)

France No. 33 tied on folded letter by star handstamp, "Paris 22 Nov. 70/(CO)" double-circle datestamp and addressed to Dieppe where it was then forwarded to London, light manuscript "voir au dos" with London address on reverse, red boxed "Affranchissement Insuffisant" and "More to Pay" in circle, Dieppe and London arrival backstamps, Very Fine, an incredible usage on an already turbulent balloon voyage, the balloon went drastically off course and had to jettison some of its mail bags in Norway to avoid crashing into the North Sea but the balloon drifted away and was found a few days later, a more complete history on the balloon flight can be found at http://www.scc-online.org/ph05may.pdf (Image)

St. Lazare" double-circle datestamp, addressed to Bordeaux, arrival backstamp of Jan. 29, Fine, judging by the date, this should have flown on the famous Richard Wallace which left Jan. 27 but was lost at sea in the Bay of Arcachon, although doesn't appear it did based on the arrival of Jan. 29 on reverse which predates other known covers from that ill-fated flight with arrival markings by a couple weeks (Image)
