998   ImageConcord Bicycle Co. Public Messenger Service, 12-1/2c Orange Red and Gray Blue (unlisted). Wide balanced margins, natural s.e. at left, "F.H. Crapo Mgr" printed signature below design which depicts cupid on a highwheel, light corner crease bottom left, Extremely Fine appearance, one of only approximately 10 copies known, an article by Gordon Stimmell in the April 1994 issue of the Penny Post (included) discusses Crapo's business activities from the early 1890's to 1897 and what little is known about the Concord Bicycle stamp, the exact dates of use for the stamp or precise nature of the service are unknown and no genuine covers are known, several of the recorded examples have severe faults, unlisted in Scott (Image)

"I knew Frank Crapo well and can vouch for its genuineness. W.W. Rich. Slightly cut in with framelines mostly complete on three sides, uncancelled as usual, appears to be genuinely used on beautiful embossed Valentine cover to Miss Jane Case, but accompanying P.F. certificate declines opinion on usage, no street address but delivered in Brooklyn, small closed tear at bottom of stamp is all but undetectable, slight light diagonal bend in stamp, original gum visible thru lace pattern of cover, Very Fine appearance, only nine covers and two fronts are recorded in our census, including the example offered here, with 2002 P.F. certificate, Scott Retail as used, off-cover (Image)
