86   Image3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A). Position 60R3, huge margins all around including part of adjoining stamp at top and sheet margin with "ter, Casilear & Co. ANK NOTE EN" portion of imprint and "No. 3" plate number at right, deep rich color nicely complemented by unobtrusive strike of blue circular datestamp, two small thin spots to the right of the imprint of little consequence

EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 3-CENT TYPE II, SHOWING A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF THE IMPRINT AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY, THE PLATE NUMBER FROM PLATE 3. A PHENOMENAL POSITION PIECE.

The plate number was engraved by hand for each plate, and can vary in size and style of lettering. Plate number copies are rare from any plate. They are especially difficult to find from Plate 3, because the plate number falls mostly between two stamps. It is only the presence of such a wide margin at top that allows this stamp to exhibit the plate number. If the margin were cut any closer to the stamp's design, then the plate number would be incomplete or missing entirely.

Position 33R2L, huge margins to in including significant portion of adjoining stamp at right (really almost a pair), large part original gum, h.r., "cancelled" by intersecting ruled lines, showing clear roulettes at top and bottom, Very Fine, scarce, these were likely done on a Bemrose rouletter and no doubt come from the same sheet, they were probably done in 1855, we sold the position just below this, with same portion of the adjoining stamp at right and with matching vertical lines, in our 2008 sale of the W. Wilson Hulme collection (Siegel Sale 964, lot 215, realized $3,750 hammer) (Image)

93 c Image3c Dull Red, Ty. I, Chicago Perf 12-1/2 (11 var). Position 61L2L, perfs intact all around, tied by "Chicago Ill. Oct. 9, 1856" circular datestamp on American House hotel corner card cover to New York City, slight creasing and small tear at top of cover do not affect stamp

VERY FINE. A DESIRABLE EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT CHICAGO PERF USED ON A HOTEL CORNER CARD COVER.

Wilson Hulme speculates in his article in Chronicle 175 that R.K. Swift distributed Chicago perf stamps to various businesses as a trial or to strengthen the possibility of selling the perforating machine to the post office. Many of the businesses were in a straight path between Swift's bank and Elijah Hadley's (inventor of the machine) office (p. 167). Covers from Chicago hotels with 3c Chicago Perf stamps were probably mailed by travelers who obtained the stamps from the hotel concierge.
