SWITZERLAND - CANTONAL ADMINISTRATION Zurich
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
5159 ng 1L1 image1843 4 Rp black, vertical red lines, type III, unused without gum, with strong color and impression, clear vertical red lines, three full margins, close margin at right that just touches the frame line at bottom, overall a fine example of a stamp that is seldom offered in unused condition; handstamped W.H.C. (Colson), with 1995 von der Weid certificate (Zumstein 1S, SFr 25,000) (In 1843 the Canton of Zurich decided to issue stamps to prepay postage. These were issued in two denominations: the 4 Rappen for local letters, and a 6 Rappen value for use to other cantons. With these issues, Zurich became a pioneer in continental Europe and the second government to issue postage stamp. If you take a look at the design of this issue, you may clearly see that the artist used a famous Penny Black of Great Britain as a model. There is a fundamental similarity in the side and top panels, the corner square and in the background, while the large figure of value takes the place of the Queen's head) cat. $27500 (Cat No. 1L1) (Image) (image 5159a)
