654 c   imageBRITISH COMMONWEALTH MALTA (65) 1919 10sh black, watermarked Multiple Crown CA, used in combination with 2sh6p olive gray and 5sh George V and tied by Maltese Cross G.P.O. pmks on legal size "On His Majesty's Service" GPO cover, registered from Valetta 10 July 1919 to Adj.Henry Flooreman in Brussels, handstamped Valetta G.P.O. Malta Registry box (No.7009), departure cds alongside, backstamped on arrival in Belgium (23.VII.19), 10sh lifted for examination and signed Brun, minor cover wear, otherwise v.f. and spectacular usage of this most iconic stamp from Malta (the St.Paul's Shipwreck 10sh black is rare because only 1,530 stamps were printed and sent to Malta. The Post Office planned to release this stamp after stocks of the 1899 issue were exhausted, but the stamp was inadvertently issued prematurely at the Valletta post office on 6 March 1919. Many of the stamps were purchased by notaries who used them for fiscal purposes and the stamp sold out within a couple of days of issue.
