In the winter of 1915-16, the Allies considered the occupation of the Holy Mountain and in anticipation, prepared a set of six stamps intended for issue on the 25th January, for use by the governing body of the Monastic Republic. They were designed by Lt.Cmdr Luke and printed in imperf. Sheets of 12, by a photographic process (similar to that used in Mafeking during the Boer War) aboard the H.M.Aircraft Carrier "Ark Royal". The 1948 edition of the Robson Lowe Encyclopedia raises two points of interest with these stamps. They bore currencies of three different languages and alphabets (English, Cyrillic and Greek) and were produced during war on a naval vessel) (Image)
