(22) 1857-61 1¢ blue Franklin Type IIIa, B Relief from Plate 11, tied with 1857-61 3c stamp by black "New York Apr 22 (1861)" cds on cover to Albany, NY, slight edgewear at far right from opening. The cover includes the original letter sent between brothers with fascinating content, detailing the one brother's attendance at the Great Meeting at Union Square the day before (April 20) - "I saw Major Anderson and Captain Doubleday but did not hear them speak...I never saw so large a crowd of people...on the Washington statue the Fort Sumpter banner is waving...This morning I went to see the 71st Regiment leave for Washington together with the 12th and 2nd Regiments...There is a $3,000 offered for Jeff Davis and General Beauregard dead or alive..." A nice example of the 1¢ Plate 11 stamp paying the carrier fee for a letter reporting on the important events in the North with the Civil War underway.
Census B359, cat. value $575.
