SPAIN Carlist Stamps

1292 E   image1874 (27 May) FL from San Sebastian, with French 70c franking, consisting of a vertical pair of 15c bister and single 40c orange, addressed to Beasain, which was at the time inside the Carlist-Controlled territory, with imperforate 1r single (cut in at left) and horizontal pair, all canceled by pen cross, with "Espana Elizondo" (30 May) transit mark and additional "Alsasua" (31 May 74) on reverse, with 1 June arrival docketing. There is a filing fold just between the pair of 1r, otherwise fine and spectacular combination franking Carlist/France Ceres issues, with 1999 Graus certificate ("extremely rare, of maximum consideration of a major specialized collection"). This letter took several days to reach a destination of only 50 miles away. To get to Elizondo, the letter was handled by French Postal officials, who did not use their cancels in order to avoid criticism from the Germans, who objected to French cooperation with Carlist Post Office at Bayonne.
