1605 E   image1950s "Dear Doctor", collection of 100+ colorful postcards, mounted on pages, mostly with corresponding images of local landmarks, sent from exotic locations around the world advertising Sodium Pentothal. Its manufacturer, Abbott Laboratories of Illinois, developed a scheme to mail a postcard every couple of weeks to hundreds of thousands of doctors and health facilities on its giant mailing list, first to US addresses and then others abroad. Each card starts with the salutation, "Dear Doctor," hence the nickname, followed by a message regarding the virtues of the drug. Cards were sent surface (boat) mail, using colorful stamps of the period (Image) (image 1605a) (image 1605b) (image 1605c) (image 1605d)
