8539 E   imageFlight Covers. 1929 (4 Feb) Evacuation of Kabul, cover franked with 1a George V, tied by Peshawar 4 Feb 1929 pmk, return address of German Legation in Kabul, Afghanistan, addressed to Postmaster, Peshawar, backstamped on reverse, also signed and dated Stephen Smith (14 Feb 1929), with newspaper clipping describing the flight, also letter from the Postmaster to the Aero Philatelic Club of India in Calcutta, signed by Stephen Smith, minor backflap tear, otherwise fine, one of only four (!) covers known to exist. Certainly, one of India's rarest air mail covers (the Kabul Airlift was evacuation by air of British and a number of European diplomatic staff and their families conducted by the RAF from Kabul between 23 December 1928 and 25 February 1929, the first large-scale air evacuation, with a total of 586 people of eleven different nationalities being rescued and taken to India. The evacuation was conducted after forces of Habibullah Kalakani, attacked Kabul in opposition to the King Amanullah, leading to British fears that its legation would be isolated and cut off) (Image)
