1851-57 Issue
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
41 c   image

United States 1851-57 Issue (5) 1851 1c blue, type I, pos. 7R1E, tied by "1 CT" St. Louis Carrier handstamp on locally addressed cover, margins in at top, but full on all other sides including part of adjoining stamp at bottom, backflap missing on reverse (not mentioned on accompanying certificate), otherwise a presentable copy of this scarce stamp on cover, which was only recently discovered.

Position 7R1E is the most sought-after position of the 1851 1c Issue, the only example featuring the complete 1c Franklin design. According to the Wagshal census, 99 examples were previously recorded, of which only 24 were known on cover. This recently discovered cover adds a new census example, bringing the total recorded population of position 7R1E stamps to 100. Additionally, it is the only recorded example of position 7R1E, on or off cover, exhibiting a carrier cancellation, making it a unique usage among all known examples of this celebrated position.

The cover bears the distinctive St. Louis framed "1 ct" carrier rate handstamp applied during the earliest months of the city's carrier service, which contemporary accounts describe as operating through a planned network of twenty-five collection boxes distributed throughout St. Louis and serviced by carriers making regular daily collections for deposit at the post office. Addressed to Theo. Clark, Secretary of the Mercantile Library Association - founded in 1846 and recognized today as the oldest library west of the Mississippi River still in continuous operation - the cover combines an important civic destination with a unique carrier usage.

A major census addition and important St. Louis carrier cover, uniting the most famous position of the 1851 1c Franklin with the only recorded carrier-cancelled example of position 7R1E,

With 2026 Philatelic Foundation certificate, cat. value $110,000.
