8001 E 3XU2 image1845 Baltimore, Maryland, 5c red on manila entire envelope, with clear strikes of signature, provisional handstamps "Paid" and "5" in oval, blue "Baltimore Md. May 5" (1846) cds alongside at left, cover addressed to Miss Susan Julia Mayer, care of Geo. M. Keim at Reading Pa., faint stains as often, still v.f., with 1980 PFC. A rare Baltimore "5 Cent" Provisional, one of only nine recorded in red (in the unpublished 1996 Don Shearer census, which lists nine 5c envelopes struck in red ink, dated from March to May 1846. While the quality of the red strikes is generally weak, the envelope offered here has relatively clear strikes.
