Canadian Provinces - Newfoundland
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
415   image(C1) 1919 Caribou 3c brown overprinted "''FIRST / TRANS- / ATLANTIC / AIR POST / April, 1919", the so-called "Hawker", lightly hinged, exceptionally well centered, signed on back by the postmaster "J.A.R." (J.A.Robinson), also Giulio Bolaffi and Alberto Diena, with 2023 Greene Foundation certificate. A fresh and v.f. example of this Air Post rarity (the stamp was overprinted for use on mail carried by Harry Hawker and Kenneth Mackenzie Grieve on their proposed non-stop flight across the Atlantic in a Sopwith biplane. The aircraft came down in the sea but the men were rescued and the plane salvaged. Only 200 stamps were overprinted, of which 95 were used on letters, 11 were given as presentation copies, 76 were sold in aid of the Marine Disasters Fund, the remaining 18 were apparently damaged and destroyed), cat. $25,000 (Image) (All Images)

416 COVER   image(C1a) 1919 The Great Transatlantic Race "The Martinsyde Raymor-Raynham and Morgan", 3c red brown, with manuscript overprint "Aerial Atlantic Mail, J.A.R." handwritten overprint applied by Postmaster General J. Alex Robinson on a 3c Caribou (117), tied by St.John''s machine cancel, April 19, 1919 on coverfront with "Per Aeroplane Raymor Newfoundland to Britain, kindness of Major Morgan and F.P.Raynham" corner address in manuscript, addressed to Miss K.Hilton in Canterbury, with part of message on back, v.f., with 1972 BPA and 1991 Peter Holcombe certificates (Shortly after the Hawker-Grieve flight left Newfoundland, another attempt was made by Frederick Raynham and C.F.W. Morgan. They took off from Quidi Vidi, Newfoundland, traveled a few hundred yards, and then crashed into the ocean. Another attempt was made in July, with the same results. The mail from these flights was recovered and transported to England by ship. Letters with manuscript overprints (which were made by W.C. Campbell, the Secretary of the Postal Department) arrived safely, but the contents of the mail bags had been damaged by water. As a result, many of the Newfoundland stamps had floated off the envelopes. Less than 20 covers are known) (catalogued as used off cover) cat. $25,000 (Image) (All Images)

A rare supplementary-mail De Pinedo cover, ex-Labrador (this mail was taken in both St. John''s and Trepassey, with only about 20 covers with overprint stamp, canceled on arrival in Rome). (The original transatlantic flight was attempted by Marquis Francesco de Pinedo between Trepassey, Newfoundland, and Rome, Italy, via the Azores. De Pinedo left Newfoundland on May 23, 1927, but a shortage of fuel caused his plane to land in the ocean, 200 miles from the Azores. The plane was towed to the islands by a schooner, and De Pinedo reached Rome about three weeks later) cat. $20,000 (Image) (All Images)
