(Early in the war, the British developed a plan to foment an uprising among the Arab subjects of the Ottoman Empire. Sharif Hussein of Mecca agreed to back the British, in return for independence. The famous Col. T.E. Lawrence was sent to train and lead Arab forces, which captured Mecca, Jeddah and Aqaba. Hussein declared independence of Hejaz on June 27, 1916, with himself as King) (Image)

3675 E   imageMilitary Mail. 1918 (22 Jan) 20 para Ottoman stationery postal card to Istanbul, additionally franked with pair of 5pa stamps, sent by an officer with the 58th division of the "Hejaz Expeditionary Force", then stationed at El Ula, with transit mark of Damascus, showing rectangular negative mark of the 58th Division HQ, the 58th division was formed on 28 Sep 1916 in Medina and remained in Saudi Arabia for the remainder of the War, handing over the city of Medina to the new Saudi forces on 13 January, 1919. This is the only recorded item from this unit, little toning, otherwise fine, with 1997 Yakup Nakri certificate ("a postal history gem from Saudi Arabia") (Image)
