Schwarzkopf & Co. Tsintau China" on backflap, filing fold away from the markings, fine, with 1950 Dr.Augsburg and Erich Boden certificates (in order to avoid the need for surcharging, it was decided that locally addressed letters presented at the counter would be marked in manuscript as having been paid in cash. Only 16 (!) examples of Tsingtau Cash Franking have been recorded, "Sch" indicating Postmaster Schulte's initialing receiving the cash) (Image)

3504 E 1,2,3 image1900 5Pfg on 10pf carmine, single without the blue crayon, used (2.7.00) on picture postcard to Germany, with "Kais. Deutsche Marine Schiffspost No.39" (SMS Hertha) and Essen (8.8.00) arrival pmks (with 1992 Royal certificate); also registered cover with provisional surcharge, used in combination with "China" 25pf orange, used from Tsingtau to Oppeln; cover with two different 5Pfg surcharges (2,3) sent from Tsingtau to Niederkalbach, with Berlin transit pmk on back, fine-v.f. (when a German relief force arrived in China on the "S.S.Dresden" on 20 April, 1900, the regular 5pf stamps to send postcards home became exhausted and 50,000 copies of 10pf stamps were overprinted "5 Pfg." at the mission printing plant and placed on sale on May 9th. After the first day, crayon lines were drawn under the new denomination to distinguish them from unsurcharged stamps) (Cat No. 1,2,3) (Image)

3512 E   image1914 (15 Sep) postal card franked with 2c Yacht, tied by Tsingtau Kiautschou departure cds, addressed to Shanghai, with boxed four-line Censor handstamp, v.f., signed Bothe, with 1991 Steuer certificate. A rare "Kiautschou Blockade" war-time usage, this postal card was carried on the last boat to leave Tsingtau for Taputur. That route was closed on the following day (16 Sep) when the Japanese occupied Tsingtau. Also included is a Feldpostkarte canceled "15.9.14 Tsingtau" and addressed to Tsinanfu (Image)

Letters to the colonies were being mailed right up to the outbreak of the war. However, due to the British blockade and capture of German ships on the high seas, there was little opportunity for delivery and mail already in the postal system was appropriately marked and returned to sender (Image)
