229 c   imageCOLOMBIA Air Post (C1) 1919 Barranquilla overprint, used June 18 on "Credit Mercantil Interior view" picture postcard written and signed by William Knox Martin, carried on the flight and sent to his mother in Salem, Virginia, signed Alex Rendon, with his 1986 certificate, rare usage of C1 on card, most were used on covers, ex-Norman Serphos collection (Lt. William Knox Martin was an instructor in the Canadian Royal Flying Corps in 1917, before transferring to the U.S. Marines in WW I. Wounded, decorated and discharged, Martin bought a surplus Jenny and headed for South America again in 1919, nurturing his ambition to found a trans-Andean airline. This time he went to Colombia, where he had been assured that the hazards would be purely vertical. He quickly demonstrated the effectiveness of the airplane for transportation by delivering mail between the coastal cities of Cartagena and Barranquilla (this personally designed overprinted airmail stamp for the service) (Image)
