1068			CHINA - Covers and Postal history 1839-1843 selection of 13 FLs used from Canton, Amoy, Hong Kong, etc. to Macao, Surabaya, Whampoa, Manila, etc., addressed to Captain Graves c/o American Ship "Thomas Perkins", fascinating contents, discussing early China trade, Opium Wars, Yankee-China trade, U.S. Naval operations, etc., no postal markings. A fine and engaging group of letters (born in Salisbury, Mass., William Graves, Jr. (1811-77) went to sea aboard his father's ships in the 1820s, ultimately becoming a master mariner. In 1834, two Salem merchants David Pingree and Emery Johnson entrusted Graves with the command of their bark "Cynthia", bound for Canton, China.
