Stampless folded letter datelined SAINT VINCENT 5 May, 1812 with faint St. Vincent 21 May 1812 circular datestamp with fleuron plus an additional strike on back. Addr to London, England (rec b/s 9 Jy, 1812). Has m/s "P.Packet 25 May 1812" & rated 2Sh. The contents are fascinating & historical incl references to sugar, rum and Negro slaves. The writer gives a first hand account of the eruption of "LA SOUFRIERE" VOLCANO, incl 16-18 earthquakes, smell of sulphur, destruction of houses, black clouds, constant showers of stones & sand, etc. He also gives further detail of the damage on the island.
