Scarce stampless folded letter datelined Leogan, St James, Jamaica 21 Jan 1840 to Holland Landing, Upper Canada. Endorsed "Via Liverpool" and "Via New York" with large red "FORWARDED" h/s and Halifax & Quebec transit cancels. Rated "5N1 Ship" and "4" for a total of "9/1" an unusually high postal rate. Legible letter inside mentions the loss of the whole ginger crop last year after the negroes got their freedom. Also talks about resentment of the previous island Governor but feels better days are ahead with the new one. VF. A NICE COVER! (Image)
