He attempted (with navigator Kenneth Grieve) to make the first Trans-Atlantic flight from Mount Pearl Newf'd in 1919. After 14 hours of flying their Sopwith biplane's engine overheated & the plane was ditched in the North Atlantic. Newf'd #C1 airmail stamp was issued for this flight. 4899   imageUnused b/w postcard circa 1920 from Selfridge's Dept. Store in London England. Depicts the Sopwith Airplane flown by HAWKER & GRIEVE in which they attempted the first nonstop Trans-Atlantic flight on 18 May 1919. They flew for 12 hours before crashing into the ocean. The plane & mailbag were salvaged by an American Steamer. The plane was then put on display at Selfridge's. This is the only postcard type that we have seen of the Hawker airplane. F, some toning.
