1218 160 image160, Tied by Bexhill on Sea 15 Sept 1919 CDS on real b/w photo postcard. Depicts German U-boat #SMU-118, which became beached at Hastings in 1919. The submarine was being towed to France afer her surrender & broke loose. The stranded sub became a popular tourist attraction & received 1,000's of visitors. Two members of the coast guard showed visitors around the interior of the sub but this was curtailed due to the leaking of chlorine gas (later both men died from aliments related to this) .
