4947   imageStampless folded cover dated inside Montreal 24 April, 1786 addr to HONORABLE SAMUEL HOLLAND, Surveyor General at Quebec, rated "9" (currency - for distance 101-200 miles). On reverse has a VF complete 2-line MONTREAL APRIL: 24 datestamp (R. LOWE HS-24a, RF 'E' - RARE). This is a nice historical cover - Samuel Holland joined the British Army in 1756 & served during the SEVEN YEARS WAR. He was with GENERAL WOLFE when he died on the Plains of Abraham. Holland was later appointed the first Surveyor General of British North America. He mapped British possessions of what was to become Prince Edward Island, Magdalen & other areas. VF. 4949   imageFolded lettersheet datelined York 9 June, 1798 (now Toronto) carried by Military Courier addr to Captain Hugh McDonell, Royal Canadian Volunteers, FORT GEORGE. The British moved across the Niagara River after giving up Fort Niagara to the US in 1796. At this time Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake Ontario was under construction. Completed in 1802 it was mostly destroyed by the Americans during the War of 1812. The letter is written to Capt McDonnell (letter about property, a mill etc) was a soldier & significant political figure in early Upper Canada. He was a loyalist & taken prisoner in the Mohawk Valley of New York during the American Revolution. He escaped & came to Canada. VF, tiny tear at top. A RARE HISTORICAL COVER.
