Kelleher and Rogers Limited Sale - 37

Worldwide A-Z

People's Republic of China
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description
3001 nh image1968, "The Whole Country is Red" (W14) (Yang W63. Scott 999A), a pristine, wonderfully centered example, with glowing color and immaculate paper, o.g., never hinged, Very Fine, with 1995 B.P.A. certificate. Scott $135,000 (HK$ 1,062,990).

The stamp was officially issued on November 25. Inaccuracies in the map were noticed almost immediately, including the omission of the Xisha and Nanshi Archipelagos, and the entire issue was withdrawn from sale on November 26. However, some post offices had begun selling the stamp on November 24, prior to its day of issue, and these have since found their way to market.

Please note: In order to bid on this lot, we require a deposit of HK$375,000. Please contact our office for further details. (Image1) (Image2)

3002 nh image1968, "Great Victory of the Cultural Revolution" (W82) (Yang W82. Scott 999A footnote), top right corner margin single, the prepared but unissued 8f value showing Chairman Mao and Lin Bin Piao before a Victory celebration in the countryside; immaculate and completely sound, with a private heart-shaped margin marking matching the printing ink color, o.g., never hinged, Very Fine, with 1995 B.P.A. certificate. Scott $300,000 (HK$ 2,362,200).

One of the rarest stamps of the Cultural Revolution, this issue is known to have been released early by the post office in Hebei, which sold the stamp before the officially anticipated date of issue. Therefore, prior to the cancellation of this issue, a few examples actually came on the market before the entire supply of stamps was returned to Beijing.

3003 nhbl image1980, Year of the Monkey (T46) (Yang T234. Scott 1586), complete sheet of 80, Post Office fresh with shiny gold, clear engraved lines, and unfolded, o.g., never hinged; insignificant thumbnail crease in top right selvage tab mentioned strictly for accuracy, Very Fine, a stellar example of this popular item. Scott $172,000 as singles (HK$ 1,354,330).

This was the first "New Year" stamp issued by the People's Republic of China. With a print run of less than 5,000,000, most examples were sold on a limited basis by Chinese post offices or to new issue collectors abroad. Thus the number of surviving complete sheets is relatively low.
