98XU1 |
Galveston, Tex., 1861, 5¢ black (Scott 98XU1), well struck at top right with "5" handstamp on "Ballinger & Jack,
Attorneys at Law, Galveston, Texas" blue oval cameo and "Galveston Tex. Dec. 8" (1861) double circle datestamp at bottom left, addressed to "Aaron Coffee, Esq., Sandy Point P.O., Brazoria Co. Texas"; faults including overall toning, otherwise Fine to
Very Fine, no provenance noted by Crown, but the other 2 have sold for between $14,500 and $19,000 hammer when offered in 2012, 2014 and earlier this year, only 13 are listed in Frank Crown's online census, which includes 3 cameos. Scott
$1,500.
This cover is listed and illustrated in Frank Crown's online census on the Civil War Philatelic Society's website (https://www.civilwarphilatelicsociety.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/Res-Cen-GAL-TX-v1-1-240629.pdf; this is
GAL-TEX-E01-042). Crown states this is not postmarked and carried outside the mails, but only because the poor quality of the photograph that appeared in the Sept. 1964 issue of the Confederate Philatelist fails to show the postmark which is clearly
visible on the actual cover; the author of the article, Earl Antrim, wrote "The Galveston, Texas Type I Provisional is one of the most beautiful and ornate handstamps of the Confederacy. Postmaster John B. Root had this Provisional made from a
mortised electrotype, with "PAID" set in the center. The value, 5 or 10, was added as needed." (Image)
