294a |
1901, 1¢ Pan-American, center inverted (Scott 294a), block of 4, deep rich colors and proof-like impressions,
A
RARE BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE ONE-CENT PAN-AMERICAN INVERT., o.g., hinge remnant, face-fresh with bold color and clean detail, well centered with intact perforations; bottom left stamp with a light natural gum bend, tiny hinge thins affect all but top
left stamp (which is sound), Very Fine appearance. A rare multiple, with only 13 blocks of four, one block of six and a block of 20 in the Levi records. Scott $75,000.
Johl reports that these 1¢ inverts were found at at
least four post offices (Bessemer, AL, Richmond, VA, Utica, NY, and in Connecticut) soon after they were issued. (Image)

296a |
1901, 4¢ Pan-American, center inverted (Scott 296a), block of 4, large part disturbed o.g., lovely milk chocolate
colored frame and well placed charcoal shade vignette on bright white paper; horizontal perfs mostly rejoined, few irregular perfs at top left, top right stamp tiny sealed tear and slight diagonal crease, Extremely Fine centering throughout and if
this block were broken into singles, each would individually grade as Extremely Fine. Off the market for the past decade, this is one of the best-centered of the six blocks of 4 that remain after all of these years, three of which are well
centered and have both gum and paper faults, ex Col. Edward H. R. Green, Eno and Bechtel. Scott $400,000.
Two sheets of inverts (400 stamps in four panes of 100) were intentionally printed but never sold at a post office. One
pane was overprinted "Specimen". One pane was retained by the Post Office Department and affixed to a ledger page in the Post Office archives and in about 1916 or 1917, 97 copies from that pane were somewhat roughly removed from the pane, creating
disturbed gum and thins, and traded for stamps the government's collection needed, 197 stamps were destroyed, and 106 stamps (both with and without "Specimen", including three from the retained post office pane), were distributed to friends and
dignitaries. (Image)

1908, 5¢ blue, experimental coil, perf. 12 horizontally (Scott 317), Issued as part of the Post Office's early 1908
experimental coils. The story commonly heard from the old time dealers is that contemporary philatelists largely dismissed these early coils because they had straight edges on opposite sides of the stamp, so they were seldom saved by collectors.
Regular imperforate sheets of 400 were printed, perforated in one direction, and hand-cut into strips that were pasted together to form rolls. Due to early lack of interest and the fragile nature of these elusive experimental stamps with very small
perforations, surviving multiples are exceptionally scarce, o.g., previously hinged, Fine to Very Fine, with 1957, 1999 and 2007 P.F. certificates. Scott $6,000. (Image) (Image2)

1904, 2¢ Louisiana Purchase, vertical pair, imperf. horizontally (Scott 324a), It has been pretty firmly established
that only one intact pane of 50 was discovered in the Midwest, found its way into the Worthington collection. Sold intact as a complete sheet at J.C. Morgenthau (one of the first large stamp auctions) in the historic 11 volume Worthington sale, this
unique sheet was broken down into pairs and blocks. Any piece from this sheet is seldom offered at auction with survivors from this single pane becoming coveted trophies for only the most advanced collections. This pair is the upper right corner
margin pair from positions 5 and 10 and contains full selvage at the right, o.g., previously hinged; top stamp has a diagonal crease and sealed tear at top left that are visibly apparent on the certificate photograph, yet apparently considered by the
PF to be so insignificant that they remain unmentioned in the accompanying certificate description, Very Good to Fine, with 2024 P.F. certificate. Scott $25,000. (Image) (Image2)
