3332 1907 image1907 $20 Saint-Gaudens High Relief Double Eagle, Wire Rim-PCGS MS64 CAC, A superb example of one of the most celebrated and visually dramatic coins ever produced by the United States Mint. This 1907 Saint-Gaudens $20 Double Eagle is the famous High Relief, Wire Rim issue, certified MS64 by PCGS and further distinguished by a CAC approval sticker, confirming the coin's exceptional quality and eye appeal for the assigned grade. The High Relief Double Eagle represents the original realization of Augustus Saint-Gaudens' revolutionary design for America's largest circulating gold denomination. Commissioned as part of President Theodore Roosevelt's effort to elevate the artistic quality of United States coinage, Saint-Gaudens created a bold sculptural design unlike anything previously produced for regular American circulation. The obverse depicts a commanding full-length figure of Liberty advancing forward with torch and olive branch, rays of the rising sun behind her and the Capitol visible at lower left. The date appears in Roman numerals as MCMVII, one of the defining characteristics of the original High Relief issue. The reverse presents Saint-Gaudens' magnificent eagle in flight above the rising sun, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and TWENTY DOLLARS.The extraordinary depth of the design proved exceptionally difficult for the Mint to manufacture. Each High Relief coin required multiple blows of the dies to fully bring up Saint-Gaudens' sculptural detail, making mass production impractical. Only 12,367 High Relief Double Eagles were ultimately struck before the design was modified to a much lower relief suitable for normal production. The Wire Rim variety resulted when metal was forced upward at the junction of the die and collar during the repeated striking process, producing the characteristic thin raised edge seen on these pieces. This handsome specimen exhibits rich golden color, strong mint luster and the remarkably complete definition expected from the multiple-strike High Relief production process. Liberty's figure, the radiating sun and the sweeping feathers of the flying eagle are rendered with tremendous dimensionality. Certified PCGS MS64, the coin resides at the desirable Choice Mint State level, while its CAC endorsement provides an additional measure of quality within the grade. The 1907 High Relief has long transcended the Saint-Gaudens series to become a landmark of American numismatics—widely collected as a stand-alone rarity and admired as one of the finest achievements of American medallic art. An exceptional opportunity to acquire a Choice Mint State, CAC-approved example of this iconic early 20th-century gold issue. (Image) (Image2) (Image3) (All Images)
