3314 1810 image1810 Capped Bust $5 Gold Half Eagle, Large Date, Large 5, BD-4-PCGS MS62, An impressive Mint State example of early United States gold coinage, struck at the Philadelphia Mint during the presidency of James Madison. This 1810 Capped Bust Left $5 Half Eagle is the desirable Large Date, Large 5 variety, corresponding to the Bass-Dannreuther BD-4 die marriage, and is certified MS62 by PCGS.Designed by John Reich, the obverse presents Liberty facing left wearing her distinctive cap, surrounded by thirteen stars with the date below. The reverse features a powerful heraldic eagle with shield, outstretched wings and the E PLURIBUS UNUM banner, surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the denomination 5 D. The distinctive large, rounded numeral 5 identifies the reverse variety. The coin was struck in the early federal gold standard at approximately 91.7% gold and has a weight of 8.75 grams. The Large Date, Large 5 is attributed as BD-4 and is the most obtainable of the four major 1810 half eagle varieties, making it particularly important as a representative of John Reich's classic early American gold design. Despite a reported overall 1810 mintage of 100,287 pieces, survival is only a small fraction of the original production; PCGS estimates approximately 675 examples of this variety survive in all grades, with roughly 330 in Mint State. This specimen displays attractive yellow-gold color with considerable remaining mint luster and a well-defined strike. Certified PCGS MS62, it represents a notably high-grade survivor of a more than 215-year-old American gold issue and offers substantial appeal to the advanced early gold specialist as well as the collector seeking a Mint State Capped Bust Half Eagle for type.A handsome and historically significant early United States gold coin with excellent eye appeal and strong collector demand.
