In 1860, when New Brunswick converted from Sterling to Decimal currency, Charles Connell, the provincial Postmaster General, had 1¢, 5¢, 10¢ & 12½¢ stamps designed and printed by the American Bank Note Co. He used own portrait on the 5¢ stamp, instead of that of Queen Victoria. The Governor General, appalled at Connell's arrogance, refused to approve the design. Connell then resigned his post and the entire printing of 500,000 stamps was recalled and burned, save for one sheet of 100 retained by Connell and a single copy kept by the government agent responsible for destroying them. 300 stamps were prepared wit 48 examples reserved for mail to be posted at Harbour Grace, and eight (two blocks of 4) were given to the pilots. The remaining 244 were placed on sale at St. John's and reportedly sold just one to a customer. It was written that all 244 stamps were sold within 15 minutes and it is now known that 100 were used on mail actually carried to Europe on this flight. It is assumed that the remaining 192 stamps were left in unused condition, though it is likely that very few remain in unhinged condition. (Image) (Image2) (All Images)
