3262 og 21 image1857, 1¢ blue, type III (Scott 21 var.), plate 12, position 46L12, gorgeous color on nicely blued paper with full even perf tips all around, fresh lightly hinged o.g., Very Fine example of this phenomenal and underappreciated rarity. We could not find another example with original gum that has been offered to the market in the last 30 years; Stamp Auction Network has never offered one, and we have only seen one example in unused no gum condition. Furthermore, this is the only #21 position 46L12 with o.g. certified by the Philatelic Foundation, with 1991 P.F. certificate noting position.
Scott $9,000 (woefully undercatalogued).


As noted in the description for the #18 in this sale, Plate 12 consists of 199 Type I & Type IIs and one stamp (position. 46L12) that is Type III (top & bottom lines broken) or Type IIIa (bottom line broken). Jay Kunstreich and Richard Celler, in an article published in the Nov. 2005 Chronicle (pp. 284-291), discuss this position in great detail and provide images so you can see why 46L12 differs from the others on plate 12, and whether or not the T relief from plate 11 was used; a copy of the article accompanies. The Scott Specialized catalog prices an o.g. position 46L12 at $9,000, yet it prices an o.g. example from plate 4 at $17,500 and neither notes or prices a no gum example, even though one sold in 2014 at auction for $12,000 hammer. Early printings from this position were type IIIa (broken at top or, rarely, at bottom but not both), and as the plate wore during use, transitioned to type III (broken at both top and bottom); the status of the line at bottom cannot be determined with certainty to be broken or intact; P.S.E., probably based upon the Feb. 2007 auction description and the difference in catalog value between type IIIa (#22, $2,200) and type III (#21, $17,500), took the safer choice and declared it to be type IIIa.
