1851 Issue
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
3246 O 5 image1851, 1¢ blue, type I (Scott 5), with almost half of position 6R1E at left, full margin at right, clear at top and into at bottom, two strikes of "Cincinnati O. Ja[n] 2[?]" circular datestamp, lovely rich color; faults not visible when the stamp is in your album, otherwise Fine. 96 used examples, both on and off cover, listed in the Wagshal/Siegel census (this is #35), with 1982 P.F. certificate.
Scott $45,000.

Previously with position 8R1E (#5A) attached, and with a sale history of four offerings between July 1982 and Oct. 1984 (none prior and none since; its final offering was here at Kelleher, where it sold for $6,750 vs. $20,000 Scott catalog value). Footnote in Scott reads "Values for No. 5 are for examples with margins touching or cutting slightly into the design, or for examples with four margins and minor faults. Very few examples with the design untouched exist, and these sell for much more than the values shown."

3247 O 5A image1851, 1¢ blue, type Ib (Scott 5A var.), position 8R1E, with wide sheet selvage at top, clear at right, just into left and bottom, beautiful bright color, grid cancel, Fine, with 1987 P.F. certificate noting a small corner crease at bottom left that we struggle to see.
Scott $11,000.

Only seven positions (3-9R1E) were entered on the plate with the complete design, but when positions 13R1E-19R1E were entered on the plate, small parts of the bottoms of six of the positions above were erased with position 7R1E remaining complete. Pos 6R1E & 8R1E were more complete than the other four (3R1E-5R1E & 9R1E). Footnote in Scott reads, "Values for No. 5A are for sound examples with margins just clear to just touching the design on one or two sides. Examples with margins well clear of the design all around are scare and will sell for much more than the values shown."

LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
3260 og 18 image1861, 1¢ blue, type I (Scott 18), showing the complete design in beautiful blue Plate 12 color, well centered with large margins at sides, especially for this notoriously tightly spaced issue, o.g., lightly hinged at top, Extremely Fine for this very challenging issue, with 1978, 1998 & 2007 P.F. certificates, the 1978 in horizontal pair with type II.

3262 og 21 image1857, 1¢ blue, type III (Scott 21 var.), plate 12, position 46L12, gorgeous color on nicely blued paper with full even perf tips all around, fresh lightly hinged o.g., Very Fine example of this phenomenal and underappreciated rarity. We could not find another example with original gum that has been offered to the market in the last 30 years; Stamp Auction Network has never offered one, and we have only seen one example in unused no gum condition. Furthermore, this is the only #21 position 46L12 with o.g. certified by the Philatelic Foundation, with 1991 P.F. certificate noting position.
Scott $9,000 (woefully undercatalogued).

As noted in the description for the #18 in this sale, Plate 12 consists of 199 Type I & Type IIs and one stamp (position. 46L12) that is Type III (top & bottom lines broken) or Type IIIa (bottom line broken). Jay Kunstreich and Richard Celler, in an article published in the Nov. 2005 Chronicle (pp. 284-291), discuss this position in great detail and provide images so you can see why 46L12 differs from the others on plate 12, and whether or not the T relief from plate 11 was used; a copy of the article accompanies. The Scott Specialized catalog prices an o.g. position 46L12 at $9,000, yet it prices an o.g. example from plate 4 at $17,500 and neither notes or prices a no gum example, even though one sold in 2014 at auction for $12,000 hammer.

SMQ F-VF 75.
Scott $2,200.

Early printings from this position were type IIIa (broken at top or, rarely, at bottom but not both), and as the plate wore during use, transitioned to type III (broken at both top and bottom); the status of the line at bottom cannot be determined with certainty to be broken or intact; P.S.E., probably based upon the Feb. 2007 auction description and the difference in catalog value between type IIIa (#22, $2,200) and type III (#21, $17,500), took the safer choice and declared it to be type IIIa. However, under very high magnification, we believe the bottom line is broken, making this the rarer type III (cat $17,500).

Scott $80,000.

The earliest documented use of this issue is October 6, 1858, and when the 1851 and 1857 issues were demonetized at the start of the Civil War in 1861, very few remained in Southern post offices (unlike the 90¢ which has an EDU of Sept. 11, 1860 and saw little use). It has been estimated that 20-30 mint o.g. examples of Scott 27 exist. Most are poorly centered and faulty.
