1402 cover 230 image1893, 1¢ Columbian, Jan. 1, 1893 First Day Cover (Scott 230), vertical pair tied by "Boston Mass./Jan. 1/5PM/93" First Day duplex cancel on James S. Conant & Co., Designers and Engravers on Wood illustrated corner card cover, used locally; stamps clean, cover with small tear at top center; an exceptionally scarce Jan. 1 First Day Cover, particularly desirable with the corner card, Very Fine, with 1970 A.F.D.C.S. certificate.
Scott $20,000.

The official First Day of Issue of the Columbian Issue (excluding the 8¢) was Sunday, Jan. 1, 1893, when most post offices were closed; philatelists have long considered Jan. 2 as the accepted alternate First Day of Issue. The only recorded Sunday Columbian covers are franked with the 1¢ (3), 2¢ (5) and two each of the 3¢, 4¢, 5¢ and 10¢.

1404 cover 231 image1893, 2¢ Columbian, First Day Cover (Scott 231), clean, deep-colored an fully margined example, tied on cover from Minneapolis to New Gloucester, Maine, by Minneapolis Jan. 2 duplex; includes the original correspondence, datelined Minneapolis Jan. 2, 1893, which begins: "Dear Sir, As I was at the Post Office this mornign they told me that the new stamps had just arrived. I bought a supply, and one of the first I send on this letter to you, thinking that perhaps, as they do not send them to the small offices at first, you might not have seen one. But perhaps before you get this they will get around, for it takes a letter three or four days to get to you from here, it is such a long, long ways."; cover with age toning, neatly opened at right; stamp with natural straight edge at right, the top appearing at first to be a second straight edge, but hints of perforations rubbed smooth due to placement; still an exciting item with charming correspondence, Fine to Very Fine, with 2002 A.P.S. certificate.
Scott $4,000.

The stamp was issued on Jan. 1, a Sunday, when most post offices were closed. Jan. 2 is thus considered a First Day of Issue as well.
