Auswãrtiges Amt in Berlin." in purple (faint); since the cover was from overseas, it should have been rates at 20pf, so it was handstamped "Porto" and marked "20" in blue crayon (double the shortage); part of the sender's message written on the back of the cover; reduced just a tad at the left with a light vertical file fold, Fine to Very Fine. 3227 cover 43 imageCover from Newport News, Va. to Tübingen, cover with no postal markings from a German Sailor aboard the Appam in Newport News, Va.; Censor label dated Dec 21 from Military Censor Office O.17 in Berlin wrapped over the top; opened out for display, the fold reinforced, Very Fine. Unique! Illustrated on pages 43-45 of the Handbook.


The cover was inscribed by the sender, "Feldpost mit U. [nterseeboot] Deutschland," apparently prompting the recipient of the letter to write to Capt. Paul König of the Deutschland, asking him if the letter had actually been carried on a submarine. Included with this cover is König's handwritten response (and the cover in which it was mailed), datelined Hamburg, 25 May 1917, confirming that said letter had indeed been carried by submarine from the United States to Germany.
