U.S. Aerial Mail Service" (Scott C3), stamp tied by "Philadelphia Pa. Sta. C May 14, 1918 3:30 PM" duplex cancel, boldly struck "Air Mail Service Wash. N.Y. Phila. Phila. May 15, 1918 First Trip" datestamp at top left, on cover to U.S. Patent Office in Washington D.C. with return address of Edwin J. Logue of Philadelphia (father of Edwin J. Logue Jr (1921-2000) the famous urban planner) on top backflap; light central fold does not affect stamp or any markings, stamp with small internal crease at top not mentioned on accompanying certificate, still Very Fine. Illustrated on page 45 of Joe Kirker's book United States Airmail Stamps 1918: History and Analysis of First Day of Sale Postal Use, and in a Feb. 2015 United States Specialist article by Ken Lawrence which reviews Kirker's book and compares their independent analyses of these covers (copy of article accompanies). Ex Silver, "Aristocrat" (Berkun) & Price, with 2007 P.F. certificate (obtained by the buyer after the Berkun sale).

24¢ stamps were first received at the Washington D.C. main post office in the afternoon of May 13, 1918, but none were sold, and thus all May 13th covers are fakes. The earliest genuine covers are those postmarked on May 14, 1918—the day the stamps went on sale in New York, Philadelphia and all post offices in Washington, D.C. per Lawrence, "Kirker reported and pictured six May 14 covers—one canceled at Washington, 2 at New York and 3 at Philadelphia. My favorite, which I have examined in person, is the Philadelphia cover shown in Figure 7." (THIS COVER). One of the Philly covers traveling by surface mail and not on the inaugural flight. Lipsner helped organize the first airmail service.
