The 3m stamp was issued on December 16, 1939, and was intended for unsealed Christmas/New Year military mail to the U.K. However, since it was really too late for Christmas mail to reach it's destination on time, the stamp was withdrawn and re-released in October of 1940. However, shortly after that, Military Mail was allowed to be sent postage-free and very few postally used examples are known—and only 12 legitimate covers.
