2582 cover 112 image1869, 1¢ buff, Bootlegged mail (Scott 112), two singles used with a 2¢ Pictorial (113) on a cover originating in France—possibly in a diplomatic pouch—and delivered to the French Consulate in New York where the U.S. postage was applied and the blue seal of the Consulate handstamped on the back; the cover was then placed in the mail, where the stamps were canceled by rosettes duplexed with "New York City, PO, Received, Oct 11, 645 AM" c.d.s.s; "ghost" images of the stamps appear below the stamps as the result of a horizontal file fold, Fine to Very Fine. A scarce double Carrier rate cover., with a 2011 A.P.E.X. certificate.


The cover is addressed simply to "Monsieur Alexdre. Stewart, Nigociant [merchant], New York", but apparently that address was sufficient, as Stewart was a very prominent fabric merchant.
